The Gatehouses and Education Centre

Located in the gatehouses of St Machar's Cathedral, the Education Centre provides the environment in which school pupils can prepare for a visit to this historic place of worship.

Headteachers and class teachers of primary and secondary schools: please note!

Gatehouses St Machar's Cathedral in Old Aberdeen is open from 9-5 every day of the year and has always welcomed school parties. In recent years materials have been developed by a qualified teacher to support such visits. These are attractive and accessible factsheets and worksheets which relate to 5-14 guidelines, especially in RMPE and Environmental Studies. Teachers who already bring parties speak warmly of their value.

Further, the Cathedral Gatehouses provide attractive accommodation which can be made available. Two spacious rooms allow pupils to complete their worksheets and to have their packed lunches if need be on these many days that are not warm and sunny! There are toilets too.

There are schools from quite far afield which find a visit to the Cathedral fits nicely into a day which includes other attractions such as Satrosphere.

This year the Cathedral's Education Officer, whom some teachers will know, is not available at all times but the accommodation, resources, accommodation and welcome remain.Classroom

Notice should be given to the Cathedral Secretary, telephone (01224) 485988, making clear whether materials are needed. The Cathedral, despite its place in Scotland's history and the access it offers to the public, receives no financial support from any public body so it would be appreciated if schools using these facilities would make a donation.
